A step by step guide on how to get out of the paycheck to paycheck life and create a sustainable plan with your finances. Chapters 00:00 Introduction 00:59 My Income Situation 02:20 How I Organize My Money 06:24 How I Budget My Money 10:17 What I Do When I Get Paid 13:17 How I Manage My Money On A Low Income Join My Patreon Page!: 🤍 If you would like to support my channel!: 🤍 Mint Mobile (save on your cell phone): 🤍 Books I'm Reading: Die With Zero: 🤍 Out of Your Mind: 🤍 That Will Never Work: 🤍 Currently I am on a low income; however, despite being on a low income, I am still able to make ends meet, save, and invest my money. In this video, I want to walk you through a detailed explanation on exactly how I manage my money on a low income. 1. My Income Situation In this video, I want to be completely upfront with you on my personal financial situation. I am currently living on about $2500 a month after taxes. My income is extremely unpredictable, but over the last year I have managed to live off of an income of about $30,000 a year. Despite this, I am not living paycheck to paycheck, but I have a large amount of savings and investments in case of an emergency. 2. How I Organize My Money Organizing your money is the first step in gaining control over your personal finances. My personal plan consists of the following: (1) I put all of my money in a no fee bank account; (2) I organize my money in a checking account (which is for spending), a savings account (which is for emergencies), and an investment account (for growing my money); and (3) I put all my expenses on a credit card that I pay off at the end of the month. I find it extremely important to have your money divided in between accounts so that each dollar has a home and a purpose. 3. How I Budget My Money Regardless of your income (but especially on a low income), you need to create a budget so you are not spending more than you are making. My personal budget plan consists of the following: (1) Track all your expenses, so you know exactly where your money is going; (2) See if your spending is sustainable, which means to see if you are spending more or less than you are making; and (3) Examine all of your expenses one by one and see if they can be lowered or completely cut out. Regardless of what your financial situation is, we all have areas of our finances that can be improved. Creating a budget that is sustainable where you are spending less than you are making is extremely important. Expense Tracker: 🤍 4. What I Do When I Get Paid I believe in making my finances as simple as possible and so I have created a simple plan to pay all of my bills in full every month without taking on any debt or taking money from savings. I do the following when I get paid: (1) Pay myself first, which is to set aside a specific amount of money each paycheck in my savings account; (2) Pay off my credit card which I put the majority of my expenses on and make sure at the end of the month the balance is paid; and (3) pay my non credit card expenses by manually paying them or putting them on auto pay. Whenever I get paid I follow this simple financial process. 5. How I Manage My Money On A Low Income I manage my money by keeping my money organization simple, creating a sustainable budget, and keeping my finances simple. When I focus on developing a plan, I am able to make living on a low income more manageable. It is important to remember that regardless of your income, you should focus on creating a good relationship with your finances. The trillions in excess personal savings built up in the pandemic are beginning to vanish amid high inflation, according to Federal Reserve economists. The monthly saving rate fell to a 15-year low in 2022. It started a recovery in 2023, but remains well below long-term trends. Despite this slowdown in saving, consumer spending has remained robust, keeping the U.S. from recession. “Something like $2 [trillion] to $2.5 trillion above what we would have otherwise expected were saved by American households,” said Curt Long, chief economist at the National Association of Federally-Insured Credit Unions. Collectively, Americans have trillions in excess savings compared with expectations leading up to the pandemic, according to Federal Reserve economists. Watch the video above to learn about how the personal savings rate affects you and the wider economy. At its simplest, interest is the cost of borrowing money. Generally, you’ll pay interest to borrow money, and you can collect interest when you lend money. When you deposit money in a savings account, you are in essence lending a bank money and will earn interest on that money. Explore our video overview on how interest works on savings accounts. Putting your money into a savings account is a terrible way to make passive income. The bank might pay you around 0.01% on the money you save, which is very little when considering a good profit would require a large amount of money to be put in the savings account to begin with… 📉 Instead, buying shares of your bank gets you dividends, which have a higher percentage compared to a savings account. By buying shares you can make a lot more profit than you would by saving. Where does your money need to go after you get paid? This video is about the 6 Places where your money should go - to save money and invest! 🖌 Links: 🐪 Hump Days Newsletter ➭ 🤍 ▶️ Join the Patreon Community ➭ 🤍 🗞 Follow My Twitter ➭ 🤍 👾 Personal Finance Discord ➭ 🤍 🖌 Free Stocks: ► WeBull (Get 7-12 Free Stocks worth up to $30,600 when you deposit at least $0.01) ➭ 🤍 ► Moomoo (Get 5 Free Stocks valued up to $2500 each) ➭ 🤍 ► Public ($10 Free Stock) Investing App ➭ 🤍 ► Robinhood (Free Stock Valued Up To $250) ➭ 🤍 Today I wanted to walk you through step by step exactly where I think your money should go whenever you get paid. I think that a lot of people get confused as to how they should be allocating their money when they get paid - and honestly if you just follow along with the steps outlined in this video, you could find yourself in a way better financial situation in the future. Step 1 is contributing to a retirement account, but before I even talk about that, we need to first address that most people don't even get to Step 1 because most people just have their pay, when they get paid - going into their checking account. And then they spend their money - whether that be needs, wants, investments, debt payoff, all out of one account. This is not the best approach because it's not a proactive approach, it's more of a reactive strategy and that's one we want to avoid for financial independence. And this is exactly what I used to do as well, so there's no shame in being here, but lets talk about how we can get better. Step 1. We want to be sure that a percentage of our paycheck before it even hits our account is being set aside for retirement. Step 2. The money finally hits your Checking account. Then it can go a few places... Step 3. I guarantee you haven't heard of this, it's a fund I've called "The Overhead Fund". - Essentially its a fund for all of your NECESSITIES in life - rent, utilities, groceries, insurance, car payments, etc. - THIS IS NOT an EMERGENCY fund, I'll talk about this next. - Rather, this is a fund that you only use to operate your necessities, and it's also a fund that I think you should try to save around 3-6 months of NECESSITY expenses in. - Ideally you know your monthly recurring expenses down to a number, and you save a portion of your paycheck toward this fund - I like using an Overhead Fund for this as a separate account, and I would suggest allocating most of your paycheck into this fund and your emergency fund until they're established. Step 4. Your Emergency Fund. Ideally this is an account that you DO NOT touch unless, for EMERGENCIES. Most people suggest 3 months of living expenses for an emergency fund. I would suggest 6 months of living expenses for your emergency fund, but that's just because I like to be on the safer side. Step 5. Paying Off Debt If you have any high interest rate debt, you want to start putting a dent in that as well before moving on to Step 6. High interest rate debt would be anything over 10% in my opinion, but you could even make an argument that even 5-6% is high interest rate debt since its hard to easily beat that interest rate using investments. Step 6. Investments! This is where it gets fun. The money that is going into this investment account, it can really flow to a lot of places. Within this account you are hopefully breaking down any money that you may have into different investments for a well-diversified investment portfolio. These type of investments include: - Portioning off some cash for a real estate fund - a Fun fund for vacations, dream cars, - Investing in a Roth IRA or Traditional IRA for more retirement funding - Shorter term investments like stocks, bonds, dividend portfolios - Cryptocurrency - Precious Metals, Collectibles, etc. ▶️ My name is Humphrey Yang, I've built multiple businesses and am passionate about Personal Finance.
