🤍 — Discussion & Comments: 🤍 — Presentation Slides, PDFs, Source Code and other presenter materials are available at: 🤍 — It's 2019 and Unicode is still barely supported in both the C and C standards. From the POSIX standard requiring a single-byte encoding by default, heavy limitations placed in codecvt facets in C, and the utter lack of UTF8/16/32 multi-unit conversion functions by the standard, the programming languages that have shaped the face of development from operating systems, embedded devices and mobile applications has pushed forward a world that is incredibly unfriendly to a world of text beyond ASCII. Developers frequently roll their own solutions, and almost every major codebase from Chrome to Firefox to Qt to Copperspice and more all have their own variations of hand-crafted text processing. With no standard implementation in C and libraries split between various third party implementations and ICU, it is increasingly difficult and error-prone to handle what is the basic means of communication between people on the planet using C, let alone the security holes found in hand-rolled libraries that do not carefully handle this tricky design space. Small victories for character types that represent UTF8 exclusively, mandated UTF16 and UTF32 encoding for literals, and updating the Unicode Standard Reference in C have been accomplished by Study Group 16, who are the Unicode Arm of Standard C. With the last of the foundational work to the C standards committee underway and participation from individuals at Mozilla, Google, Qt, Microsoft, Bloomberg, and Apple informing the design, Unicode in C is planned to be the biggest and best addition of first-class support for Unicode in C. This talk is going to be an overview of the problem space Text in C the people who are tackling the problem Study Group 16 and the first major libraries and works to be produced for handling encoding and normalization both flexibly and efficiently. It will talk about what we learned from its predecessors Boost.Text, text_view, ICU and Ogonek and what can be reasonably expected for C23 and what aspirations SG16 has for the future. Unicode is an industry standard, allowing computers to consistently represent and manipulate text expressed in any of the world's writing systems. It assigns a number, or code point, to each of approximately 100,000 characters, including the APL character set. The workshop will briefly introduce the new Unicode features and then focus on the differences between the Classic and Unicode editions of Version 12.0. The Classic edition, which is upwards compatible with version 11.0, will continue to exist for an extended period to allow for an orderly migration. The workshop will discuss interoperability between the editions and offer suggestions on how to approach the issue of migrating applications to take advantage of the Unicode data.

Swift strings are represented by the String type. The contents of a String can be accessed in various ways, including as a collection of Character values. Swift’s String and Character types provide a fast, Unicode-compliant way to work with text in your code. Thinking about the way your strings are encoded when stored in a disk file or sent over the internet has previously been a no-brainer as all characters fit in one byte. A text file was a text file and a string could be encoded in a binary without hesitation. Now days you have to think about character representation, ways of telling other programs how characters are represented, peculiarities of other languages than your own, terminal capabilities, file system name encoding and so on. The Unicode support in Erlang/OTP has been built up during the last three major releases to what it is today. While still not complete, it now covers a lot of areas where third party libraries was previously required.

SignWriting Symposium 2016, Presentation 61 “SignWriting in Unicode and Rich Text Considerations" by Stephen E. Slevinski, Jr., software developer of SignPuddle, SWIS, and the Sign Language Wikipedias Unicode is a widely accepted standard for encoding the various writing systems of the world. Sutton SignWriting is encoded with Formal SignWriting (FSW) which is plain text ASCII and equivalent to UTF-8. Last year the Unicode Technical Committee discussed SignWriting and the various data representations. In early August 2016, SignWriting will be discussed at UTC # 148, including a new proposal for Unicode 10. Formal SignWriting is Plain Text. Morten Kromberg, Technical Director (CTO) The defining feature of Dyalog Version 12.0 is support for Unicode character data. Unicode is an industry standard, allowing computers to consistently represent and manipulate text expressed in any of the world's writing systems. It assigns a number, or code point, to each of approximately 100,000 characters, including the APL character set. The workshop will briefly introduce the new Unicode features and then focus on the differences between the Classic and Unicode editions of Version 12.0. The Classic edition, which is upwards compatible with version 11.0, will continue to exist for an extended period to allow for an orderly migration. The workshop will discuss interoperability between the editions and offer suggestions on how to approach the issue of migrating applications to take advantage of the Unicode data.
