On our sailing vessel we do use a Garmin inReach device for Iridium satellite connection. For being able to use a device like GPSMAP 86i, 66i, inReach mini and inReach Explorer you have to do two things: 1) Register your device at explore.garmin.com 2) Subscribe to a a "satellite subscription plan" This video shows you step-by-step how to do number 2) There are some annoying pitfalls to take care of. This will also be shown and explained in the video. When you do all we tell you then doing the subscription is easy.

Measuring in at 4 inches by 2 inches and weighing only 3.2 ounces, anyone can make room for the inReach Mini. At its core, the inReach Mini is a two-way communication device that, at the press of a button, can get you the service and help you need if you find yourself in an emergency situation. The safety features don’t stop there. The benefit of inReach devices is that the SOS button that communicates with the GEOS Safety Center at any moment (no cell service required), also allows you to communicate clearly with the GEOS center to let them know the urgency and severity of the problem. Garmin uses the 100% Global Iridium® network for connection and we’ve never had an issue with it. We’ve been in some very remote places, deep canyons of the desert, and miles and miles from anywhere and the inReach always works for us. There are many places we travel to where we don’t have cell phone service, so it’s really nice to know we can always rely on the inReach if we need to. Before we had the inReach, we had an incident where we were traveling and could only check for messages or emails every few days. There was an emergency and we didn’t know about it until days had passed. It was heartbreaking. With the Garmin inReach, we’re always in reach if there is an emergency at home. There are so many features to touch on with the inReach mini including the mapping and tracking features, the weather updates, and more so I very much recommend that you read in-depth about the inReach Mini on the Garmin website. The Earthmate app is easy to use, extends the usability of the inReach, and provides your exact location no matter where you are. The inReach Mini is an expensive device and a subscription-based plan is necessary for the network but it is hands down worth the money. Here's everything you need to know about Garmin's new inReach Messenger, and how it compares to the iPhone 14 Emergency SOS via satellite. Garmin’s just announced a new model in their inReach satellite communicator lineup – the inReach Messenger ($299). And with it, also a new app called Messenger, which will soon work with a number of recent inReach devices. This new app aims to more seamlessly mesh your network connectivity so that it’ll use satellite messaging as previously, but also leverage cellular/WiFi networks if within range. This is ideal when you’re in sometimes viable cellular coverage, saving you satellite messages/time. Meanwhile, the new Messenger device is an entirely different form factor for Garmin, which has historically put inReach antennas in their handheld lineup, as well as more recently in some higher-end mainly off-road vehicle dashboards (Tread series). Further, from a hardware standpoint, the new Messenger can also charge your phone/devices, acting as an emergency battery bank. I was excited when the Spot X first came out and rushed to REI to buy it. After using it however, I was disappointed in a number of areas and went back to REI and also bought the InReach. While in my return period I decided to test both communicators in a number of situations and decided to make this video highlighting my findings and showing real world differences between both the devices and their respective Satellite networks they operate on. I decided after these tests to ditch the Spot X and haven't looked back since. Learn real world results comparing the Spot X 2-way communicator with the Garmin InReach Explorer +. Pros and Cons. Update: The new Spot X now has a bluetooth connection to your phone so many of the features that made the Inreach better from a utilization perceptive they have matched. Good for them. They do still however use the Globalstar network so until something major happens there, the reliability will still win on the Inreach side. But competition is definitely good for both and I look forward to seeing continued changes.

In this episode we evaluate the pros and cons of the Iridium GO communications system and Starlink with the DataHub from Predict Wind onboard our Leopard 45 sailing catamaran. We've been using Iridium GO for all of our offshore passage weather and communications as well as tracking information on our website for the past three years. This summer we purchased Starlink. We received the hardware in the summer and began using it immediately. It was amazing having wifi on our entire passage from Hampton, VA to the British Virgin Islands. Twelve days at sea and more than 500 miles offshore, we were downloading updated grib weather files every few hours, Jeff was streaming Yellowstone, and I was chatting with our kids and grandchildren, when I wasn't seasick. But that's another story. Then PredictWind came out with DataHub. This smart device gathers GPS tracking, data, and communications from the boat and transmits that data via Starlink. Don't buy a Garmin InReach Mini. They don't work reliably. It's under powered and doesn't get your text messages out in a timely fashion. If you were imagining using this to send a message to your loved ones from the trail head letting them know your ETA or just to send a message, it will not succeed at that task because sometimes it takes hours before it completes sending the message. For a safety device, you're much better off getting a PLB, or personal locator beacon, which has no subscription fee and you register it with the government. PLB's also don't suffer from the inherent unreliability of rechargeable batteries. They're designed to be as foolproof as possible. The Garmin, on the other hand, is a toy.
