LAMY produces LAMY Safari and LAMY Al Star pens, which are super popular LAMY fountain pens - but they also produce the z27 and z28 converters - which allow us to use bottled ink. Ink converters, also known as fountain pen converters, allow us to use almost any ink in our fountain pen - no just the branded ink cartridges that LAMY provide for us! That's right, it's really easy to use any other ink. This is not just cheaper, it's also better for the environment. Filling a LAMY fountain pen with ink cartridges or bottled ink can take a little getting used to if you're not familiar with how fountain pens work. Here Brian Goulet shows you how to do both of these with LAMY Safari fountain pens. The process is similar with all LAMY pens except the LAMY 2000 (which is piston-filling). From taking notes during meetings and Zoom calls, to productivity-planning and process-design, the frequency at which I use my Lamy Safari fountain pens is pretty nuts, which is all to say that I think I'm at least kind of qualified to talk about them, haha. In this video I go through everything, from the unboxing, taking a look at the design features, the initial setup, Lamy Safari cleaning, Lamy Safari nibs (nib sizes and how to change nibs), how to do a Lamy Safari ink refill, and of course writing tests, samples, and share the inks and Lamy Ink Convertor tips. There's something visceral about writing things down by hand, and something even more special yet after I started using fountain pens. Maybe it's some old-world charm; maybe it's the intentionalism required in minor upkeep, but either way, after I took the plunge into using the Lamy Safari as my primary EDC pen, there's been no turning back. The "problem" with fountain pens though, is that they can get real expensive real quickly, and so the Lamy Safari is a great entry-level fountain pen, attainable at about $20 USD, compared to the hundreds of dollars for some other models. The Safari by Lamy has become a bit of a cult-classic and a combination of the design, ease of use, design, history, and longevity, make it easy to see why. If you asked me two years ago, I would've never considered a fountain pen as an everyday carry pen because when I thought of fountain pens, I'd think of my grandpa's shirt with ink-stains on the pockets and figured they'd be way too finicky to enjoy as an EDC writing tool, but like most things that have stood the test of time, improvements have been made over the decades and centuries and the Lamy Safari fountain pen is no different. Behind the scenes! LAMY is a designer and manufacturer of writing instruments nestled in the hills of Heidelberg Germany. The company began when C. Joseph Lamy started designing pens in the 1930’s, and they moved into this facility in 1957. LAMY really began to make a name for itself when his son, Dr. Manfred Lamy began designing pens in the Bauhaus philosophy in 1966. Bauhaus embodies “function over form”, and you can see this influence in their products as well as their architecture. Their headquarters is around 170,000 square feet, where they have more than 350 employees working 24 hours a day, 6 days a week. They’ve maximized their efficiency of both their time and their space, and the scale at which their operating is beyond what we anticipated. Pride in the LAMY brand can be felt throughout the entire company, and unique elements like the LAMYteria company lunchroom, the Galleria, and the sculpture garden define their culture in a physical setting. Lamy Benitoite is one color option in the Lamy Crystal Inks lineup, and as far as I know, it's the only one that has a good amount of water resistance, at least enough for it to be marketed as a document ink. This fountain pen ink is a nice grayish teal, and it performs nicely as a shading ink. It can be a little bit of a dry writer, but as long as it's paired with the right pen, I think it's one of the best fountain pen inks for writers that I've tried. Hi, I'm Robyn of Calligraphy Joburg... In this video I demonstrate and discuss how to use a Lamy Z28 converter (the red one) in your Lamy fountain pen.. I am using the Lamy Safari but everything I show applies to the Lamy AL-Star and the Lamy Joy. Since I started using, teaching with and selling Lamy's I have never had a problem with them, and the converter is a great way to use different colour inks, as well as sparkly inks like the Diamine Shimmer fountain pen ones. Lamy's are super easy for beginners and versatile for 'normal' writing as well as traditional italic calligraphy.
