Should you use a Mr. Clean Eraser on your smart phone? The short answer is NO! The longer answer is going to be a soft no. After scrubbing my iPhone with the Magic Eraser, you can definitely see which side was scrubbed with a Magic Eraser but how much effort do you think it took to damage my iPhone with the Magic Eraser? Now if you search how to remove scratches on your iPhone, there’s a good chance you’ll come across lots of articles saying NOT to use a Mr. Clean Magic eraser and the occasional one that says it’s ok. Now all the articles that say NOT to say it will strip the oleophobic coating off. But none of those articles actually show proof of that. It’s pretty awesome that you can rank well in internet searches with articles that aren’t based on any sort of evidence. That’s the internet for you! Amazon US: 🤍 Amazon CA: 🤍 Amazon UK: 🤍 Amazon DE: 🤍 I’m in the process of reviewing liquid screen protectors so I needed to figure out a way to reduce or strip oleophobic coating on my iPhone X to see if liquid screen protectors are worth the hype. I figure some of you would actually like to see what a Magic Eraser actually does to the iPhone so I figure I make a short video about it. So what did I do? The iPhone X I decided to use was the one with a dead screen due to the Utomic Edge. Check out that review for the full story. The iPhone X I broke was a fresh one so the coating on the screen was still quite strong. I did a couple of tests to see how the coating was and you can definitely tell that the water was bunching up together because of the coating. The drop on my counter top doesn’t have the same bunching effect. I then covered 1/2 the iPhone with a layer of painters tape and then duck tape. I went with painters tape because it was the least sticky tape in my house. I then proceeded to scrub the exposed side with a magic eraser for about 2 minutes. After the scrub, I took splashed some water on it to see what would happen and I initially didn’t see a big difference. I was actually expecting to see a night and day difference. So I took it one step slower and went with a smaller amount of water and as you can tell, the one side that was covered in tape works much better than the Magic Erasere’d side. Now I decided to keep assaulting the exposed side of the iPhone to see if I could remove even more of the Oleophobic coating. This resulted in even more scrubbing with the Magic Eraser. The bout of scrubbing was followed by some motorized scrubbing with my Black and Decker car polisher. So after that, I did another round of Magic Eraser scrubbing and then the water droplet test. It didn’t seem any worse so I’m guessing the first two-minute round with the magic eraser removed most of the oleophobic coating. Now I did say that the long answer was a soft no at the beginning. When I tried to do a comparison of greasy fingerprints, I couldn’t see if one side was better or not. The Oleophobic coating should reduce the amount of smudging but my face grease test didn’t result in anything really noticeable. On a day to day basis, I doubt anybody would be able to concretely say “O yeah, that spot is missing some of the oleophobic coating”. Now when it comes to scratches, I took the file on my leather man and gently grazed part of my iPhone screen. I was really hoping that I was just scrapping the coating layer of the screen but even that light graze damaged the actual glass of the iPhone since the Magic Eraser did absolutely nothing to minimize the scratches. So the lesson from all of this is DON”T USE A MAGIC ERASER ON YOUR iPHONE IF YOU VALUE Whatever is left of your oleophobic coating. If you’re wondering if I was able to re-add the oleophobic coating to this iPhone, well, you’re going to have to watch that video because at the time of this video, I haven’t finished it yet. - Subscribe to stay in the loop! Starting on Thursday, it’s going to be rolling out to Google One subscribers who use the Google Photos app on Android or iOS as well as “all Pixel users.” Magic Eraser, as well as the “Camouflage” function that lets you desaturate potentially distracting background objects rather than erasing them from a picture completely, will come with any level of Google One plan. If you have a Pixel, you won’t have to have a plan at all to get it. Google says it’s also adding editing features like an HDR effect for videos and exclusive collage editor styles for Google One subscribers and Pixel users. Google says it could be a few weeks before everyone gets access to the new photo editing features. This isn’t the first time Google’s adding features to One — people who subscribe to premium tiers also get access to a VPN service that can be used on computers and iPhones as well as Android phones (and which is included with the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro for no extra cost). The company also gave subscribers access to other extra photo editing features, such as color focus and smart suggestions.
