With the “Deconstruct” function, architects can use their Building Information Models as the backbone of their design, and at the same time add algorithmic design logic using Grasshopper. 📌[ENGLISH] food4Rhino webinar: Rhino.Inside Cadwork This webinar introduces Rhino.Inside Cadwork. Cadwork is a widely used software in timber construction, now linked to Rhino and Grasshopper. We will have a look at the components of Cadwork in Grasshopper, and Matias and Miro will present a practical project. More info on food4Rhino: 🤍 Speakers: - Michael Brunner, 29 (1993), graduated in 2019 with a diploma in wood construction technology. After a job in a planning office, he started at cadwork in 2020. At cadwork, Michael Brunner works in development and is studying software engineering part-time at the FH Ost in Rapperswil. - Matias Penrroz is a Chilean Architect focusing on the potential of timber construction and digital planning processes to achieve high-quality timber buildings. After his architectural studies at the PUCV in Chile (2013), he worked independently as an Architect founding Bordo ARQ, working primarily with hardwood species from South America from furniture up to architectural scale projects. After realising the potential of timber construction, he decided to move to Switzerland to study the master's Wood technology program at the BFH with a specialisation in complex timber structures (2018-2021). After three years of part-time studies combined with an assistant position at the Institute for Digital Economy in Construction and Wood Industry (IdBH), he has deepened his knowledge about interoperability issues in digital collaboration for planning timber buildings, specifically between structural engineering and architecture. He firmly believes that timber construction requires designers to engage in a much more holistic approach in the early design stages and that digital tools can be of high contribution to excel the best of wood as a sustainable material for the construction industry. - Miro Bannwart is a Bern-based carpenter and architect focusing on the exploration of the potential of the application of wood and computational methods in the contemporary architecture practice. Initially admiration for wooden structures pushed him to become a professional carpenter (EFZ 2009). However, a few years of hands-on experience in the profession and disenchantment with off-the-shelf solutions pushed him to study architecture at BFH/AHB Burgdort in Bern from 2013 - 2017. His special focus lies in the possibilities of applications of computational tools in the design and assembly processes of complex-geometry timber structures. He initiated the construction of the experimental Gravitational Pavilion, exploring the interdependence of complexity and buildability in free-form structures. From 2017 till 2019 Miro deepened his skills in robotic fabrication of timber structures by participating in the ITECH (Integrative Technologies Architectural Design Research) master’s program at the University of Stuttgart and accomplished his master thesis b-CTC including a complex 1:1 teeth beam prototype pavilion at the Zeughaus in Teufen/Switzerland. Since 2020 Miro Bannwart is employed as scientific assistant in complex timber construction at the BFH/AHB applied Science Uni in Biel at the institute for Digital Economy in Construction and Wood Industry IDBH. He deeply believes that wood and the combination of traditional methods and computational design workflows are the future of architecture and that they will play a crucial part in answering contemporary sustainability challenges.

The powerfulcombination of their use and direct input into a Building Information Model platform allows for direct visualization ofAlgorithmic Designs into a language that others in the AEC world can easily process, share and understand. This is a keyparadigm shift in Architectural processes that affect design thinking and problem solving because instead of drawing asolution to a unique problem, you can now program a ratio, proportion, relationship (or frankly whatever you want) andcontinually apply it to a family of recurring problems. Furthermore, you can see the immediate results of your custom tool intoa 3D environment of graphic representation that serves as a shared language and common ground for all building designprofessionals. These custom tools and processes of this stated workflow will be applied to the problems encountered in bulkmassing of a building subject to the NYC Zoning Resolution.
