Foundations of Modern Social Theory Lecture 5: Rousseau: Popular Sovereignty and General Will

30.07.2019

Jean-Jacques Rousseau had a colorful early life. Orphaned at ten, he moved in with a woman ten years his senior at sixteen. Their probable love affair is the subject of Stendhal’s book Le Rouge et la Noir. Rousseau was friends and sometimes enemies with many major figures in the French Enlightenment. Although he did not live to see the French Revolution, many of Rousseau’s path-breaking and controversial ideas about universal suffrage, the general will, consent of the governed, and the need for a popularly elected legislature unquestionably shaped the Revolution. The general will, the idea that the interest of the collective must sometimes have precedence over individual will, is a complex idea in social and political thought; it has proven both fruitful and dangerous. Rousseau’s ideas have been respected and used by both liberals and repressive Communist and totalitarian leaders. NIETZSCHE: Three Types of Men (Rousseau, Goethe, Schopenhauer)

07.04.2021

“There are three Images of Man fashioned by our modern time, which for a long while yet will urge mortal men to transfigure their own lives…” – Nietzsche, Schopenhauer as Educator. One of Nietzsche’s earliest writings are his so-called Untimely Meditations, a collection of essays that lack his later aphoristic and polemic style of writing. One of these essays, entiteld “Schopenhauer as Educator” is of considerable interest. We will go over the essay in its entirety in another video. Please subscribe if you want to be notified when it comes out. The purpose of this video is to highlight an interesting typology Nietzsche proposes about halfway through. Nietzsche distinguishes three types of men in the modern world. You could say they are archetypes of sorts: men who set an example that is worthy of being followed. Or are they stages individual men must go through? Nietzsche is not particularly clear on this point. Still, let’s take a closer look. The Man of Rousseau is the first type. This type “has the greatest fire, and is most calculated to impress the people” – the Man of Rousseau is a revolutionary. Yet it also a deeply troubled soul, who feels estranged from the modern world. Goethe’s Man is not angry nor dangerous. Goethe’s Man represents a renewed appreciation of Culture and history. Goethe’s Man is not a revolutionary. Where the man of Rousseau seeks to change the world through revolutionary action, Goethe’s man appreciates the world as it is, including its history. Yet he remains troubled. You could say he appreciates art and culture only to distract himself from his own troubles. His life is culturally-minded, full of pleasure, yet it’s an existence going from desire to desire, fundamentally empty. He lacks passion and brute force. The Man of Rousseau is passionate but lacks refinement and sophistication. Goethe’s Man is refined, cultured, and sophisticated. But lacks passion. Goethe’s Man needs to become angry. The Schopenhauerian Man tells the truth, even if others around him don’t like it. The Schopenhauerian Man speaks to the universal, which greatly irritates common men who are only concerned with the particular. Nietzsche praises the ideal of the Schopenhauerian Man, which is the same creature as the ascetic in Schopenhauer’s philosophy: the sage, the monk, the saint. The Schopenhauerian Man is a true philosopher in that he is not concerned with wordly affairs. The Man of Rousseau seeks to change the world. Goethe’s Man tries to appreciate the world in order to forget his own suffering, and the Schopenhauerian Man embraces suffering, and turns away from the world.

Hobbes vs. Locke vs. Rousseau - Social Contract Theories Compared

Here we look at the Social Contract theories of Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Social Contract theories look at what the relationship between people and their government should be. Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau base this on their views on life in the state of nature. Is it nasty, brutish, and short like Hobbes believed? Or are people born with a Tablua Rasa as envisioned by John Locke and therefore, the social contract should aim to protect people's life, liberty, and property. Rousseau, on the other hand felt that people are born good, but society corrupts - so if you strip away society, people can live collectively in harmony, as envisioned in his social contract theory. John Locke is the father of modern constitutional government, limited and contractual. Although an admirer of artists such as William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Jean-Leon Gerome, the self-taught Rousseau became the archetypal naïve artist. His amateurish technique and unusual compositions provoked the derision of contemporary critics, while earning the respect and admiration of modern artists like Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky for revealing "the new possibilities of simplicity." Rousseau's best-known works are lush jungle scenes, inspired not by any firsthand experiences of such locales (the artist reportedly never left France), but by frequent trips to the Paris gardens and zoo." - SUBSCRIBE: 🤍youtube.com/c/LearnFromMasters?sub_confirmation=1 Facebook: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 Contact: LearnFromMasters01🤍gmail.com LIST OF ARTISTS already posted on LearnFromMasters: 🤍 - Thank you so much for your support! #LearnFromMasters #FrenchPainter #NaiveArt #OnlineArtGallery #CollectionOfPaintings #ArtHistory #HenriRousseau

Jean-Jacques Rousseau - Le Devin du Village (1752) [full opera, audio + full score]

06.07.2022

Jean-Jacques Rousseau (June 28, 1712 - July 2, 1778) was a Genevan philosopher, writer, and composer. His political philosophy influenced the progress of the Enlightenment throughout Europe, as well as aspects of the French Revolution and the development of modern political, economic, and educational thought. Le devin du village ("The Village Soothsayer") is a one-act French opera (intermède) by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who also wrote the libretto. It was the first work in the repertory of the Académie Royale de Musique for which the text and music were by the same author. Roles: Colin (haute-contre) Colette (soprano) Le Devin or The Soothsayer (basse-taille [bass-baritone]) Synopsis: Colin and Colette love one another, yet they suspect each other of being unfaithful — in Colin's case, with the lady of the manor, and in Colette's with a courtier. They each seek the advice and support of the village soothsayer in order to reinforce their love. After a series of deceptions, Colin and Colette reconcile and are happily married. The beginnings of a truly revolutionary theory started coming to fruition from the late chasms of the enlightenment, and discourse over late political theory and the social contract. Thomas Hobbes, English philosopher, scientist, and historian, best known for his political philosophy, especially as articulated in his masterpiece Leviathan (1651). He expounds an influential formulation of social contract theory. In addition to political philosophy, Hobbes contributed to a diverse array of other fields, including history, jurisprudence, geometry, the physics of gases, theology, and ethics, as well as philosophy in general.. He was considered to be one of the founders of modern political philosophy. John Locke was an English philosopher, expounded his social contract theory in his book, ”Two Treatises on Civil Government” wrote in 1660, as a defence of the constitutional monarchy which the Glorious Revolution of 1688 had established in England. The third great exponent of the social contract was the French philosopher, Jean Jacques Rousseau. He was by birth a Swiss, but adopted France as his country. He lived in the pre-Revolutionary Eighteenth-Century of France, then ruled by the absolutist Bourbon Kings. Rousseau’s writings inspired the great French Revolution of 1789. He presented his theory in two books, ”namely, A Discoui-se on the Origin of Inequality and The Social Contract. #SocialContract #Hobbes #JohnLocke #CriticismOfSocialContractTheory #CSS #PMS #UPSC

One of MoMA’s most iconic paintings went missing for decades before it was first hung on the Museum’s walls in 1939. When he completed "The Sleeping Gypsy" in 1897, Henri Rousseau offered to sell the painting to his hometown of Laval, 200 miles southwest of Paris. The offer was declined. It was not until 1924, 14 years after the artist’s death, that the work was rediscovered in a charcoal merchant’s shop in Paris—a less than ideal place to store an oil painting. By the time MoMA acquired it in the 1930s, art dealers and previous owners had cleaned, repaired, and varnished the canvas. Rousseau’s "Sleeping Gypsy" came to the conservation studio for inspection when the Museum closed its doors to prepare for its 2019 reopening. It had been on view, nearly continually, for 80 years. During the first major treatment of "The Sleeping Gypsy" in decades, paintings conservator Michael Duffy assumed the varied roles of detective, scientist, and artist. He scoured the archives for records of past treatments, X-rayed the painting for the first time to uncover unexpected compositions hidden beneath the surface, and removed nearly a century’s worth of discolored varnish layers to reveal Rousseau’s original colors. “It’s a magical environment you could picture yourself in,” Michael ruminated when asked about his months spent working on the storied painting. “As long as you’re not afraid of large animals coming up in the night.” Subscribe for our latest videos, and invitations to live events: 🤍 Explore our collection online: 🤍 Commit to art and ideas.
