Dark Phoenix Director Simon Kinberg Interview With Dark Phoenix opening in theaters this weekend, I recently sat down with writer-director Simon Kinberg to talk about the film. During the wide-ranging interview he talked about how they designed Sophie Turner’s look in the film, what was it like writing and filming the big action scene towards the beginning of the film, if it was tough to get Michael Fassbender back in the role, why he wanted to create Genosha, deleted scenes and what will be on the eventual Blu-ray, how he came up with the ending of the film (it’s spoiler free don’t worry), and a lot more. As most of you know, Dark Phoenix is most likely the last X-Men film with the current cast and adapts the famous "Dark Phoenix Saga" comics arc, with Sophie Turner filling the role of Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix while Jessica Chastain plays a mysterious and otherworldly character. The film also sees Michael Fassbender return as Magneto alongside Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Red Lotus (Andrew Stehlin), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Selene (Kota Eberhardt). Main players Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), and Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) return. Simon Kinberg: Why he felt ready to direct and why he wasn’t intimidated by the scale of the film. What advice would he give himself if he could go back in time to the first day of filming? Which character is the easiest for him to write and which one is the hardest? What was it like writing and filming the big action scene towards the beginning of the film where the X-Men go into space for a rescue mission? How did they come up with the way Sophie Turner was going to look at Dark Phoenix? How tough was it to get Michael Fassbender to come back? Why he wanted to create Genosha in the film. What was the last thing he cut out of the movie and why? How many deleted scenes will be on the Blu-ray? Did he always know he wanted to end the movie the way it ends? Dark Phoenix Reshoots Explained by Director Simon Kinberg 20th Century Fox finally unveiled the new X-Men film Dark Phoenix last week by releasing the film’s first trailer, which teased a dramatic change of pace for the franchise. Indeed, Dark Phoenix is a shift in a lot of ways. Bryan Singer returned to spearhead X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse, but after the 80s-set Apocalypse, longtime X-Men writer and producer Simon Kinberg took it upon himself to craft a very different kind of X-Men film, one that would finally adapt the fan-favorite Dark Phoenix storyline the right way. Moreover, Kinberg opted to make the film his directorial debut. Kinberg’s script was strong enough to woo back the entire cast, and recently Collider’s own Steve Weintraub got to sit down with Kinberg and producer Hutch Parker for an exclusive interview about the film while they’re hard at work editing the movie. During the course of their conversation, Kinberg touched on the reshoots that recently took place for Dark Phoenix, and the abrupt release date change that was announced one day after the trailer was unveiled. Indeed, Dark Phoenix was originally set to hit theaters next February, but Fox instead decided to push the film to June 2019 as part of a series of release date shuffles for various films (Dark Phoenix ended up taking over Gambit’s old release date, as that film was moved to 2020). X-Men: Dark Phoenix was supposed to be the epic finale to Fox’s X-Men series that started way back in 2000, but the film ended up flopping financially and failing critically, with many calling it the worst in the series. It’s easy to blame a lot of different factors for the film’s failure, including the fact that Avengers: Endgame was still fresh in people’s minds, but director Simon Kinberg rejects that. Even though he is still quite proud of the film, Dark Phoenix director Kinberg has revealed that he is the one to blame for it being a massive flop. #XMen #DarkPhoenix #Movie Read Full Article: 🤍
(30 Mar 2019) NEW X-MEN DIRECTOR PRAISES BRYAN SINGER AS 'CREATIVE GENIUS' The director of the next X-Men movie is praising longtime franchise director Bryan Singer as "a creative genius" and not commenting on sexual abuse allegations leveled against Singer. Simon Kinberg has written and produced many of the X-Men films Singer directed, including 2016's "X-Men: Apocalypse." "We did make a lot of movies together and I think he's a creative genius. And what happens in Bryan's personal life wasn't my business and it wasn't really something that I knew about or know about. But he is somebody whose genius for filmmaking I watched up close and was always pretty astounded by," Kinberg said in an interview on Friday (29 MARCH). Appearing at WonderCon in Anaheim, California alongside his film's cast including Sophie Turner and Nichols Hoult Kinberg praised the MeToo movement but wouldn't comment on a January article in The Atlantic in which four men claim they were sexually abused by Singer while underage. Singer has denied the allegations. "It's not up to me to judge whether he was treated fairly. I don't know the facts of his life. I don't know the facts. And so I don't know. What I will say, separate from that story, is that we live in a different culture now – for the best. We live in an accountability culture. The Me Too movement is more than a moment. It's a real movement. And I think that's a great thing for culture and society and for different survivors of all kinds of different things. And so I'm a huge supporter of the way that the world has turned. In terms of Bryan specific, specific to Bryan – I just don't know enough about the facts to speak on them. And I feel like unless or until I do, it would be silly for me to say anything," Kinberg said. StarWars.com speaks with Simon Kinberg, executive producer of the upcoming Star Wars Rebels animated series. The acclaimed writer discusses his love of storytelling, the focus of Star Wars Rebels, and more. Kinberg grew up loving movies, comics, and "worshipping Star Wars." In creating Star Wars Rebels, the goal is to create something that is true to the original films, but exists on its own. "The hope and the dream is that the experience of Rebels is similar to the experience of watching A New Hope, and Empire, and Jedi for the first time," he says. He calls Darth Vader the greatest villain in the history of storytelling, and that that legacy went into creating the Inquisitor. They wanted him to be formidable and terrifying, but also show that it's possible for anyone to end up like him, which makes him more terrifying. Favorite Star Wars film? "Empire Strikes Back without question," Kinberg says, citing the drama between Vader and Luke Skywalker as the most resonant story in the films. Favorite character? "Han, because he is everything that every guy ever wanted to be." Kinberg loves his look and his Western vibe. Ultimately, he sees Star Wars Rebels as having an important task. "Rebels is going to be the first point of entry for a new generation of Star Wars fans," he says, "and it will hopefully be a point of return for existing Star Wars fans."
ET chatted with 'Deadpool 2' producer Simon Kinberg at the film's premiere about his upcoming directorial debut, 'Dark Phoenix,' and how it will remain loyal to the comic.

Executive Producer Simon Kinberg talks about Star Wars Rebels, the creation of The Inquisitor and his favourite Star Wars character.
"There's always suspicion of large organizations in immense amounts of power," says X-Men screenwriter Simon Kinberg. "Whether it's a corporation or a government, or an evil society of mutants. Especially when they are all working together." In addition to a slew of Hollywood blockbusters, Kinberg has written and produced the latest X-Men: Days of Future Past, as well as the upcoming X-Men: Apocolypse, The Fantastic Four, and Star Wars Rebels. Reason TV's Tracy Oppenheimer caught up with Kinberg at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss the mass appeal of the X-Men films and why they are so relatable to a mainstream audience. Kinberg explains how the character and plot developments in the X-Men series parallel some real-world themes like xenophobia, individuality, and government programs gone awry. "You have sort of the whole pantheon of human experience," says Kinberg. About 5 minutes. Produced by Tracy Oppenheimer. Camera by Zach Weissmueller and Alexis Garcia. "X-Men Remix" by MadChris. We interview Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg about making the film. 🤍 🤍 🤍
While at this year's Toronto International Film Festival I landed an extended video interview with Simon Kinberg. While I previously posted some of the conversation, it’s finally time for the entire interview. As you can watch below, Kinberg talks about how quickly the movie came together, landing Matt Damon, working with Ridley Scott and moving the movie’s release date up, Drew Goddard's script, his relationship with 20th Century Fox, his reaction to seeing the rough cut of Deadpool, the sequel possibly having Cable, X-Men: Apocalypse and feeling the pressure of living up to the last two movies, and more. Loaded with amazing visuals, a brilliant script by Drew Goddard, great performances from the entire cast, and science that makes sense, Ridley Scott’s The Martian is one of those special movies that needs to be seen on the biggest movie screen, in the loudest theater possible. While I saw a lot of movies at the Toronto International Film Festival, The Martian was one of my favorites. For more read Matt’s review. Based on Andy Weir‘s best-selling novel of the same name, the film stars Matt Damon as Mark Wattney, an astronaut stranded alone on mars in the aftermath of a disastrous evacuation. With only the remaining supplies, his scientific genius and a great sense of humor to subsist on, Wattney must find a “science the shit out of this” to survive on the red planet and find a way home. The Martian also stars Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Donald Glover. Simon Kinberg: :09 – Tells the crazy story of how quickly the movie came together, and his reaction to reading Drew Goddard’s first draft. 1:15 – How did they get Matt Damon onboard? 2:17 – Talks about Drew having to leave the movie as director when the Sinister Six release date was moved up. 3:33 – Working with Ridley Scott and moving the movie’s release date up. Talks about how he believes there’s something about the spirit of the book. 4:57 – When will Drew direct something again? 5:55 – What’s it like to be involved with so many big projects at Fox? Discusses his relationship with the studio. 7:35 – His reaction to the rough cut of Deadpool. 9:02 – Deadpool 2 Cable? 10:35 – Talks about X-Men: Apocalypse and feeling the pressure of living up to the last two movies. When Steve recently sat down with Simon Kinberg at the Toronto International Film Festival to talk about The Martian (which Kinberg produced), they also broached the subject of the upcoming X-Men film, X-Men: Apocalypse. Check out what Kinberg had to say in the video below, and watch him geek out about working with Ridley Scott while you're at it. Here's Kinberg's full quote regarding X-Men: Apocalypse: It delivers on the dramatic story and emotion of the last two movies. It feels like the culmination of the four main characters really — McAvoy, Fassbender, Nic Hoult, and Jen. And it’s a bigger movie in both physical scale and I would say emotional stakes too because it is the culmination of this mini trilogy of stories. Kinberg was quick to say that this is the culmination of the main characters' journey, as opposed to the culmination of the entire X-Men franchise and called it a "mini-trilogy", so Singer just revealed that for his next film, he's heading off to direct 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which means we likely wont see him at the helm of whatever incarnation the X-Men franchise takes on next.
