Mixing Covid vaccines produces as much or more antibodies as using the same shot as a booster, according to preliminary results of a widely awaited U.S. government-sponsored trial. The trial is the first major U.S. study to compare the effects of using different vaccines as boosters from the initial shot or shots. The complicated, 9-arm trial involved over 450 people and measured the effects from giving a booster shot of the Moderna Inc., Pfizer Inc.-BioNTech SE or Johnson & Johnson vaccines to those who had originally gotten a different vaccine. Overall, the results found that mixing-and-matching resulted in comparable or higher levels of neutralizing antibodies compared to same-vaccine boosting, the researchers said in the preprint posted on medRxiv.org. Rates of adverse events were similar across all the different booster groups, the study found. Early results from a University of Oxford study looking into the mixing of COVID-19 vaccine doses, specifically Pfizer-BioNTech and AstraZeneca, shows doing so is safe though it is still too soon to tell whether combining the doses will provided an improved immune response. The data comes as Canada's federal government faces pressure from provinces to release guidance on the safety and efficacy of vaccine mixing amid supply shortages. Starting this Friday, Taiwan will offer all four available brands as second doses of a COVID vaccine course. This means that for the first time, AstraZeneca and Medigen will be available as the second dose of a mixed course. Also on Friday, booster shots will become available to anyone aged 18 and older who received the second dose of a COVID vaccine at least five months before. Since it opened earlier this month, the vaccination site at Taipei Main Station has seen big crowds of people on a daily basis. The latest figures put Taiwan’s one-dose coverage at 79.58%, two-dose coverage at 65.9% and booster coverage at 0.27%. But with first-shot coverage not yet past 80%, the CECC says it will extend its vaccine clinic at Taipei Main Station. Chuang Jen-hsiang CECC spokesman Yesterday we vaccinated 1,987 people at Taipei Main Station. So altogether, we have administered 35,374 shots there. We have decided to extend the vaccine clinic there to Dec. 29. Starting Friday, booster shots will be available to adults aged 18 and up who received their second shot at least five months before. AstraZeneca will not be available as a booster shot to the general public without medical reasons, but Moderna, Pfizer and Medigen will. Also starting Friday, members of the public will be able to choose brands other than Moderna and Pfizer as the second shot of a mixed-vaccine course. That means Medigen, which has a lower incidence of side effects, will be available as a second shot. Meanwhile, some doctors say that an interval of five months between a second shot and a booster is too long, and could leave people vulnerable. But the CECC says it’s the right policy for Taiwan’s current situation. Lee Ping-ing CECC specialist advisory panel Currently Taiwan is not experiencing an epidemic. We don’t see any local cases. On top of that, the first three priority groups already satisfy this five-month requirement. So taking into account Taiwan’s current situation, we don’t need to adjust the five-month interval for boosters. Immunocompromised people won’t have to wait as long to get their booster shot. Their recommended interval is 28 days. Everyone else will have to wait five months for a booster.
The CDC has now endorsed boosters of all three COVID-19 vaccines, with some restrictions, and has signed off allowing people to mix and match.
The Food and Drug Administration is reportedly set to allow a mix-and-match approach for COVID-19 vaccine booster shots. Ulysses Wu, MD, chief epidemiologist, Hartford HealthCare, about mixing and matching COVID-19 vaccines, he does think it would help boost immunity, HHC will wait until FDA approval before setting up a system for mix and match vaccine boosters.
You may soon be able to mix and match COVID-19 booster shots. It's believed emergency use authorization for Moderna's and Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 booster shots could come soon. We also could hear if the FDA will allow people to mix and match boosters, meaning getting a different shot than what you received initially. "Personally, I think the data is pretty impressive," said Lisa Morici, PhD with Tulane's School of Medicine. Morici says antibodies from the vaccines decrease over time, so boosters are needed. However, research shows getting that boost from a different vaccine than what was received initially is proving to be beneficial. MORE; 🤍

This video lecture of BiologyExplained talks about the effect of mixing covid 19 vaccines. The lecture talks about the recent study about mixing Astrazeneca-Oxford vaccine,( also known as Covishield in India and Vaxzevria in Europe) with Pfizer BioNtech vaccine. 830 participants were enrolled for the study and they were divided into four groups. Two groups had vaccine mix , group 1: Astrazeneca-Oxford vaccine for 1st dose followed by Pfizer BioNTech second dose; group 2: Pfizer BionTech first dose followe by Astrazeneca-Oxford vaccine second dose. These are called heterologous prime(first dose)-booster (second dose) vaccine. In the other two groups either two doses of AstraZeneca or Pfizer was given. These are called homologous prime-booster dose. The study protocol had dose intervals of 28 days, which is discussed in this video and 84 days interval(results not published yet). It was found that mix vaccines produced very good immune response. Both Tcells and Antibodies were found. Astrazeneca-Oxford vaccine followed by Pfizer BioNTech gave better immune response than Pfizer BioNTech followed by Astrazeneca-Oxford vaccine. However the side effects were also more in the vaccine mix. Although mixing vaccines seems to work better, but more data is required before we conclude anything. ST. LOUIS - A mix-up at a plant making the Johnson & Johnson vaccine has ruined nearly 15 million shots. This is causing problems for those most vulnerable in the St. Charles area. In St. Charles County, the vaccination efforts are going well according to health director Demetrius Cianci-Chapman. They vaccinated more than 12,000 people last week, most of which received the Pfizer or Moderna shot. The director said a delay in Johnson & Johnson's Janssen shots creates a big problem for those in senior living communities or those who are homebound. “Accessing health care is a challenge in the U.S.,” Cianci-Chapman said. “For some it’s even more of a challenge. It might not be a transportation issue, some have mobility issues. They might lack the support to get to a frequent appointment.” The health director said the one-dose vaccine limits the exposure risk for the most vulnerable. “It could create a situation where they aren't able to come back for a second shot, they lack full immunity,” the health director said. Texas Today's Chris Rodgers finds out if you mix the vaccine.
Comments from the World Health Organization taken out of context caused some confusion and concern this week about the safety of mixing vaccines. Dilshad Burman gets clarification from Toronto’s Associate Medical Officer of Health.
With a steady stream of imports of AstraZeneca, Moderna and Pfizer COVID vaccines, as well as the locally developed Medigen, several different brands of vaccines will end up being administered at the same time. Moreover, flu shots will begin in October, and that means as many as five different vaccines will be administered simultaneously. This has made primary care providers concerned about the increasing potential for vaccine mix-ups. To help in tracing possible adverse reactions, the CECC is reminding everyone to separate flu and COVID shots by at least a week. The roll-out of COVID vaccines has been gaining steam with batches of AstraZeneca, Moderna, and Pfizer arriving one after the other, and locally made Medigen added to the list. This has the country potentially on target for earlier than expected 60% single vaccination coverage by mid-October. However, COVID jabs are running up against the flu vaccination season, raising concerns amongst primary care clinics about administering all these vaccines simultaneously. Lin Ing-jan R.O.C. Primary Care Physicians'' Association Usually all of one vaccine company''s supply will get used up before receiving another company''s. This is controlled by the health authorities. So, let''s say this week''s vaccine is AstraZeneca, we wouldn''t receive a whole week''s quantity. Usually we''ll have one or two days worth of doses in our refrigerators, and once they''re used up, we''ll receive more, so it can get a bit complicated. Looking at the sequence for vaccinations, the appointment platform is at the eighth round of AstraZeneca, and opening up to the first group of senior recipients of Moderna to receive their second dose. Pfizer vaccinations for schools across Taiwan are concentrated on Sept. 22, and starting on the 25th, Pfizer vaccines will be administered to members of the public who''ve made a reservation online. Starting on the 28th, the recently arrived 1.08 million doses of Moderna will be given to seniors for their 2nd dose. Then on Oct. 3, Medigen will be rolled out as a second dose vaccine, and if we add in the flu vaccinations that would begin on Oct. 1, that makes five kinds of vaccines in the mix to sort out. Lee Ping-ing CECC Specialist Advisory Committee member That shouldn''t be too big of a problem. What''s important is verifying the vaccination records of people, because people might get the wrong vaccine. Sometimes someone''s record is incomplete, so then there''s no way to verify accurately what vaccine the person had before. That can increase the chances for a mix-up. The CECC encourages everyone not to worry. If prior vaccination is verified then there won''t be any vaccination errors. But be sure to keep in mind that COVID and flu shots require a one week separation. Chang Shan-chwen CECC specialist advisory panel convener Because in general vaccinations that result in adverse reactions mostly happen within seven days, and in order to avoid uncertainty around these incidents, and exactly which vaccine caused it, we separate by seven days. Experts advise that the risk of vaccination mistakes is greatly reduced by people proactively providing their vaccination history and medical providers doing a double check on the system prior to giving someone a jab.
This video lecture of BiologyExplained talks about mixing Covid 19 vaccine. The study talks about accidental mixing of Covishield and Covaxon in UttarPradesh India. 18 participants were given first dose of Covishield and second dose of Covaxin, 6 weeks apart. For comparison 40 participants with both doses of covishield, 6 weeks apart were included in the study. Also 40 participants with two doses of Covaxin, 4 weeks apart were included in the study. It was found that the mix group is as safe as Covishiled and Covaxin. The antibody response was significantly higher in the mixed froup as compared to Covishield or Covaxin group. This means more protection when the vaccines are mixed. The mix vaccine was found to be effective against different variants of concern. Highest amount of Neutralizing antibody was produced against Alpha variant, followed by Delta variant. However least Neutralizing antibody was produced against Beta variant. Thus, the accidental small study shows that mixing of Covishield with Covaxin is safe, effective and works against variant. DCGI has approved for a larger study. However, there are certain limitations of the study. The study was done on only 18 participants, which is a very small number, moreover the baseline antibody level was not known for the participants and the study was done on only older population. Larger study is required to find the effectiveness of the vaccine mix.
