Controlling the amount of light hitting the camera’s sensor is the key to having nice exposure. Exposure is a basic part of filmmaking, but there’s so much to learn about exposure beyond what the camera can control. Today on 4 Minute Film School we’re going to show you how you can use lighting to get perfect exposure no matter what situation you find yourself in. In this video, Valentina from the A-Team will walk you through two very different setups and show you how to get great exposure in each one. First, she looks to see if there are any light sources in the frame that she can’t control. If there are, it might influence the way she lights the rest of the scene. Next, she makes sure the exposure on the subject’s face is good. This means balancing it with any other parts of the frame, as well as keeping it from being too bright or too dark. Next, she fills in the rest of the scene to establish an even exposure throughout the entire shot. The main aspects addressed in this video are control, under exposing, and cameras. Control refers to being able to manipulate the lights in your scene. Having control of the lighting is extremely important for getting good exposure. Under exposing refers to lighting your scene intentionally darker than normal. There are benefits to this method over lighting the scene brighter than normal. The utilization of a camera naturally refers to relying on your camera (as a tool) in order to get good exposure. All cameras have limitations and lighting can go a really long way towards getting good shots. You might think exposure is a basic part of cinematography, but you’d be surprised to see how easily good or bad exposure can completely change the way work is received! Bad exposure can make a professional look like a beginner, and good exposure can make the most inexperienced shooter look like a pro. So the next time you’re out shooting, pay special attention to the highlights and the shadows of your image so you can nail the exposure. Today we talk about 3 critical video settings that you will find on almost every camera. This video is an excerpt from my G85 Video Guide: 🤍 Overview of the Settings: Shutter Speed Controls how LONG light hits the sensor each second. Also controls motion blur effects. Saving Private Ryan is a great example of how a fast shutter speed can be used for tension. The Bourne movies are a great example of slow shutter speeds (when Jason is dreaming/remembering his past). 180 Degree rule explanation. Aperture Controls how MUCH light hits the sensor. Also controls depth of field or how much of the shot is in focus. ISO Controls the sensitivity (brightness) of sensor. Noise can be introduced at high ISO levels so try to avoid those. How I Use These Settings: 1) Set shutter speed for desired look (180 rule is applied when I shoot most of the time) 2) Set aperture for desired depth of field. 3) Use ISO to make final exposure changes. From all of these tips and tricks, there’s one tip in particular that many people are completely surprised about. It’s incredibly simple, but it can make a massive impact on your end result. We’re talking about using Auto-Exposure Lock to prevent under or over exposed shots. It’s a simple setting that can really make or break your videos. By default, every time you open the iPhone camera app, you start out in Auto-Exposure mode. This can be great in a lot of circumstances, like when you’re outdoors shooting a video on the move with changing scenery and lighting, where it will constantly adjust the exposure to compensate for lighting changes. BUT there are many times when this can actually destroy the quality of your videos, resulting in drastic exposure changes throughout a relatively static shot, or the exposure being calibrated on areas you don’t want to focus on. For times like these, Auto-Exposure Lock is the answer. It’s quick and easy to use, and it gives you a whole new level of control over your iPhone videos. Here’s how to use it! Publication: Online Photometric Calibration of Auto Exposure Video for Realtime Visual Odometry and SLAM (RA-L 2018, ICRA 2018 Best Vision Paper Award finalist) Authors: Paul Bergmann Rui Wang Daniel Cremers Paper: 🤍 Project: 🤍 Code: 🤍 Abstract: Recent direct visual odometry and SLAM algorithms have demonstrated impressive levels of precision. However, they require a photometric camera calibration in order to achieve competitive results. Hence, the respective algorithm cannot be directly applied to an off-the-shelf-camera or to a video sequence acquired with an unknown camera. In this work we propose a method for online photometric calibration which enables to process auto exposure videos with visual odometry precisions that are on par with those of photometrically calibrated videos. Our algorithm recovers the exposure times of consecutive frames, the camera response function, and the attenuation factors of the sensor irradiance due to vignetting. Gain robust KLT feature tracks are used to obtain scene point correspondences as input to a nonlinear optimization framework. We show that our approach can reliably calibrate arbitrary video sequences by evaluating it on datasets for which full photometric ground truth is available. We further show that our calibration can improve the performance of a state-of-the-art direct visual odometry method that works solely on pixel intensities, calibrating for photometric parameters in an online fashion in realtime.

I've found this is the best way to set the exposure for video recording on the D5100; especially in low light situations. Obviously this is no substitute for having full control of manual exposure settings, such as on the Canon T2i/T3i, but it's sufficient enough for most amateurs. The noise in the video would be even less with a suitable video editing program such as Sony Vegas, or Adobe, where you can adjust the rendering settings, contrast, et cetera. All of my videos are edited in WMM V6.0, which is very sub-standard, and creates mediocre quality on my published videos.

How to take CREATIVE LONG EXPOSURE photos One of the things that makes long exposure photography so striking is how it has the power completely alter your viewer’s whole perception of a place. With a long exposure, you are dealing with an extended passage of time, compressed down into a single image. It’s a form of photography that is very far removed from making images of the world we experience in day-to-day life. You can use it to create images that play with our perception of reality. Images can be more surreal, more dream-like. Long exposure is also a great way to make your shot immediately say “This photograph is not a snapshot.” It gives your work a gravitas that commands attention. It can also bring out the best in you as a photographer, because it forces you to take your time and think about every detail of your shot. But there’s a lot more you can do with long exposure than you might think. It’s so much more than just light-trail night shots of cities and black and white ‘art’ images of the sea.
