In this Vray and SketchUp tutorial, learn about the different kinds of artificial lights you can use to light your interior renders! Learn to use sphere lights, spotlights, emissive materials, and more to create realistic lighting in your interior models! MY YOUTUBE SETUP 🤍 Check Us Out on - Website - 🤍 Twitter - 🤍 In this video, we’re going to talk about lighting an interior model with artificial lights in Vray. If you’re looking for more rendering Tutorials every week, make sure to click that subscribe button. Today I wanted to talk about some of your options for lighting an interior model within SketchUp without using the environment lighting. You’ve basically got a few different options for lighting your interior models with artificial lights – this is assuming that you don’t want to light your model with the environment lighting in Vray (sunlight and background lights). To start off, turn the sunlight off within your lighting section of your Vray asset editor. You’ll note that you still get some exterior lighting from your background image, which you can adjust within your settings section. Now, let’s take a look at some different lighting options. To start off, let’s add a sphere light to your model. Basically, a sphere light is a light that emits light in all different directions equally. You can adjust the power of the light both by scaling it up and down, and by adjusting the intensity within the lighting section of your asset editor. One thing to note – if your image is not bright enough, that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to go in and run the intensity of your lights up to a super high level. Instead, go in to your camera settings and adjust your camera exposure to bring your lighting level up. In this case, I’m going to take this point light and adjust its size so that it fits within this lamp in my model. I’m also going to adjust the radiant power units to Watts and set it to something like 80. Though the visible wattage of the light doesn’t really correspond with the power usage of bulbs, this still allows me to set my lighting in a way that it makes sense to me. Now let’s add a couple spot lights to our image. While a sphere light is a light that shines in all different directions, a spotlight is basically a light with a direction associated with it. Note that when setting your spotlight, you can either just single click in order to place it, or you can hold the shift key to set things like cone angle, penumbra falloff, and more. Note that when we initially set this light, the light itself casts a very defined edge, which isn’t very realistic, and doesn’t allow the light to really move into the rest of the room. However, if we adjust the Penumbra angle setting, you’ll note that your light edges become more blurry, and more light also makes its way into the room. We’re not going to talk about IES lights too much in this video, but these are basically lighting information files that you can download from lighting manufacturers to simulate properties of actual lights, like bulbs, etc. An omni light is very similar to a sphere light. Honestly, I’m having a bit of trouble telling when to use which one, so any of you Vray experts out there leave a comment down below and let me know! Finally, you can also create light within an interior render using an emissive material. An emissive material is basically a material within Vray that emits light. You can use this for things like TV screens, lighting faces, and more. In this case, I’m going to add an emissive TV screen, as well as an emissive faced material at my spotlights, otherwise they look funny. Once you have your lighting the way that you want it, you can do a non-interactive render to create a more detailed rendering from your image. In this tutorial you will learn how to setup and render a realistic interior lighting setup in V-Ray for 3dsMax. We will be going through the basic scene preparations and then create 2 differetn interior lighting setups: One using a V-Ray Sun & Sky System and then another setup that just relies on a single HDRI. We will explore the concepts of MIS (Multi Importance Sampling) and how we can use the new Adaptive Dome Feature of the Domelight to eliminate the use of Portal Lights in V-Ray. Additionally we will explore the new Chaos Cosmos Library and use it to populate our interior lighting scene. These techniques are great for Archviz or Architectual Visualisations with 3d Studio Max. I am using 3ds Max and V-Ray 5 in this demo, but you can get similar results even with earlier versions of V-Ray. You would need V-Ray NEXT for the Adaptive Dome Feature at least though. If you use earlier V-Ray versions you can use the workaround using Portal Lights. Chapters: 00:00 - Introduction 00:12 - Scene Breakdown 00:44 - Basic Render Settings 01:21 - Sun & Sky Setup 03:10 - Tonemapping 04:15 - Multi Importance Sampling 07:33 - Finalizing 10:26 - HDRI Lighting 12:39 - Outro Be sure to subscribe to the channel in order to be notified about upcoming tutorials :-) Check out my Patreon for all my scene files, additional videos or just to support this channel :-) 🤍

Product Links in the description are typically affiliate links that let you help support the channel at no extra cost. For this video, we’re going to render our scene without any materials to just get our lighting right. This is a good way to start off because your render will work much faster without Vray having to calculate all the lighting and how it would work with the materials. We’re going to start off by turning on SketchUp shadows – these will give you a preview of what the actual shadows will look like within your model. You can adjust your time of year and also time of day settings to get your sunlight where you want. If you’ve already applied materials to your model, you can turn on a material override in the settings section. In this case, I haven’t applied materials yet, but if you have, you can go into “Settings,” “Material Override.” This will override your materials to whatever color you’ve set. In this case, for simplicity’s sake, I have not placed glass in the windows. To exclude a glass material from your material override, you can adjust that using the material settings in your Vray Asset Editor window. The first thing you’ll notice is that your render is a bit dark. We’re going to adjust this by going in and adjusting our camera settings. You can find these within your Vray Asset Editor window, under the settings tab. One thing to note – whenever you have an interior render that isn’t bright enough, it’s a good idea to start by adjusting your exposure rather than making your lights brighter. This becomes especially important when dealing with artificial interior lights, otherwise your lighting calculations start becoming unrealistic. In Vray, the camera acts a lot like a camera would in real life – the shutter speed or exposure value is going to affect how bright your image is. The lower the value, the brighter the image will be. You can either just adjust the exposure value, or there are more advanced settings if you click on the advanced settings button. In this case, we’re going to set our exposure value to 11. Note that this makes your image noticeably brighter. However, you need to make sure that you don’t increase exposure or brightness so much that you image becomes blown out. You can check this by clicking the button for “force color clamping.” This will indicate on your image where the super bright areas are. In this case, you can see how we’ve brightened our image up so much that we can’t see our sky or our ground plane anymore. Let’s reduce the brightness of our sun to .5. See how this reduces the blown out areas in our image? Our shadows are also looking a bit too straight – very unrealistic. To create more soft, rounded shadows, go into your sunlight settings and adjust your sun size – in this case, we’ll set it to 3. Now, however, our image is dimmer again. What we want to do is create an artificial light that will push more light through our window. To do this, we’re going to use a rectangle light outside our windows. A rectangle light is a light in Vray that casts light. You can add a rectangle light using the lights toolbar within Vray. Simply place it outside your window – in this case, we can scale it so that it covers both windows. You’ll notice however, that when we place this, we can no longer see our sky, which is not what we want, so we’re going to go into our light settings and under options, select the option for invisible. This means that the light will be cast without the actual geometry being rendered. Note that you may have to make some adjustments once you turn your materials back on, but by adjusting the settings that we’ve already changed in this video, it should be fairly easy for you to achieve the results that you’re looking for!
