Rockwell B-1 Lancer "The Bone" | The Evolution Of The Supersonic Bomber | Upscaled Documentary

A documentary about the The Rockwell B-1 Lancer, a supersonic variable-sweep wing, heavy bomber used by the United States Air Force. From the B-1A prototypes to the B-1B. The Lancer It is commonly called the "Bone" (from "B-One"). It is one of three strategic bombers serving in the U.S. Air Force fleet along with the B-2 Spirit and the B-52 Stratofortress as of 2022. The video also features the story of the B-17 Bomber The B-1 was first envisioned in the 1960s as a platform that would combine the Mach 2 speed of the B-58 Hustler with the range and payload of the B-52, and was meant to ultimately replace both bombers. After a long series of studies, Rockwell International (now part of Boeing) won the design contest for what emerged as the B-1A. This version had a top speed of Mach 2.2 at high altitude and the capability of flying for long distances at Mach 0.85 at very low altitudes. The combination of the high cost of the aircraft, the introduction of the AGM-86 cruise missile that flew the same basic speed and distance, and early work on the stealth bomber all significantly reduced the need for the B-1. This led to the program being canceled in 1977, after the B-1A prototypes had been built. The program was restarted in 1981, largely as an interim measure due to delays in the B-2 stealth bomber program. This led to a redesign as the B-1B, which differed from the B-1A by having a lower top speed of Mach 1.25 at high altitude, but improved the low-altitude speed to Mach 0.96. The electronics were also extensively improved, and the airframe was improved to allow takeoff with the maximum possible fuel and weapons load. Deliveries of the B-1B began in 1986 and formally entered service with Strategic Air Command (SAC) as a nuclear bomber that same year. By 1988, all 100 aircraft had been delivered. With the disestablishment of SAC and its reassignment to the Air Combat Command in 1992, the B-1B was converted for a conventional bombing role. It first served in combat during Operation Desert Fox in 1998 and again during the NATO action in Kosovo the following year. The B-1B has supported U.S. and NATO military forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. As of 2021 the Air Force has an inventory of 45 B-1Bs. The Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider is to begin replacing the B-1B after 2025; all B-1s are planned to be retired by 2036. Subscribe to Dark Skies: 🤍 The B-1 Lancer is considered an icon of the last decades of the Cold War. This exceptional aircraft could fly at night, through mountains, and as low as 200 feet without being detected by air defense systems. It has flown over 12,000 sorties over Syria, Libya, Afghanistan, and Iraq, and, even to this day, the aircraft remains relevant. From the beginning, the plans to build the B-1 faced significant opposition. It was even canceled at one point by President Jimmy Carter, who thought the bomber was too expensive. Still, the B-1 has endured. The Bone, as it’s popularly known, might be retired from service in the year 2036. Until then, it continues to surprise with its speed, maneuverability, and unique weapon system. - As images and footage of actual events are not always available, Dark Skies sometimes utilizes similar historical images and footage for dramatic effect. The B-1B's blended wing/body configuration, variable-geometry wings, and General Electric F101-GE-102 turbofan afterburning engines all work together to provide long range, maneuverability, and high speed while also improving survivability. When combined with its large payload, excellent radar targeting system, long loiter time, and survivability, the B-1B is an essential component of any joint/composite strike force. It’s armanent includes 84 500-pound Mk-82 or 24 2,000-pound Mk-84 general purpose bombs; up to 84 500-pound Mk-62 or 8 2,000-pound Mk-65 Quick Strike naval mines; 30 cluster munitions (CBU87, -89, -97) or 30 Wind-Corrected Munitions Dispensers (CBU-103, -104, -105); up to 24 2,000- pound GBU-31 or 15 500-pound GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munitions; up to 24 AGM-158A Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles; 15 GBU-54 Laser Joint Direct Attack Munitions. During the first six months of Operation Enduring Freedom, eight B-1Bs dropped nearly 40% of the total tonnage delivered by coalition air forces. Although B-1Bs only flew 2% of the sorties during the Operation Iraq Freedom, they dropped 2,100 JDAMs, or half the total expended. As the conflict in Iraq dragged on, the Bone (or B-one as it is popularly known) became a popular weapon, serving as a strategic bomber in a tactical close support role. UU. Most bombing roles are now carried out by multi-role ground attack machines like the F-35 Lightning. However, the Air Force still needs big strategic bombers, aircraft so large they can deliver massive and accurate payloads to a particular target. To achieve this, America has a strategic bomber fleet that includes the impressive Rockwell B-1B Lancer. Often referred to as the world's ultimate supersonic bomber, the gigantic and powerful metal bird of prey can carry up to 24 2,000-pound bombs or up to 24 Joint Air Surface Standoff Missiles. It can even reach an outstanding 1.2 Mach speed at sea level! In official footage recorded and published by the Air Force, the Lancer's features are put to the test for the entire world to see. As the aircraft glides on the runway to take off, the pilot increases thrust until positive climb rates are achieved. The massive B-1 then flies into the skies, and the fun begins. As the aircraft crosses the speed of sound, the cockpit begins to visibly shake. Even so, the crew members remain calm, the pilot coolly looks out his window, and the B-1 moves on to its next mission… - Dark Footage showcases the most unbelievable photos and videos from history while telling the stories behind the camera. Featuring military, space, aircraft and real-life historic events caught on tape.

Presented by Rockwell as part of the B-1 Bomber flight test program, this film B-1 ON THE MOVE SUPERSONIC! shows the prototype B-1A aircraft tail #71-40158 and likely dates to around 1975. At this time the crew consisted of Charlie Bock and USAF Col. Ted Sternfall (sp?) flying out of Edwards Air Force Base. At 4:09, an aerial refueling exercise with a KC-135 is shown. At 6:15, a high speed run is made with the aircraft entering Mach 1.0 at 6:20. The prototype B-1 four-turbofan strategic heavy bomber made its maiden flight on 23 December 1974; designed to meet USAF Strategic Air Command's Advanced Manned Strategic Aircraft (AMSA) requirement, it incorporated variable geometry wings (maximum sweep of 67 degrees), accommodated a four-man crew and had an estimated maximum speed of Mach 2 at altitude. The B-1A would not be deployed due to rising costs affiliated with the program. President Jimmy Carter defunded the program in 1977. President Ronald Reagan endorsed the aircraft when he came into office, but pushed for a new version dubbed the B-1B that had subsonic, low level, deep penetration capabilities. The Rockwell B-1B Lancer is a supersonic variable-sweep wing, heavy bomber used by the United States Air Force. It is commonly called the "Bone" (from "B-One"). It is one of three strategic bombers in the U.S. Air Force fleet as of 2018, the other two being the B-2 Spirit "Stealth Bomber", and the B-52 Stratofortress. The B-1 was first envisioned in the 1960s as a platform that would combine the Mach 2 speed of the B-58 Hustler with the range and payload of the B-52, and would ultimately replace both bombers. After a long series of studies, Rockwell International (now part of Boeing) won the design contest for what emerged as the B-1A. This version had a top speed of Mach 2.2 at high altitude and the capability of flying for long distances at Mach 0.85 at very low altitudes. The combination of the high cost of the aircraft, the introduction of the AGM-86 cruise missile that flew the same basic profile, and early work on the stealth bomber all significantly affected the need for the B-1. This led to the program being canceled in 1977, after the B-1A prototypes had been built. The program was restarted in 1981, largely as an interim measure while the stealth bomber entered service. This led to a redesign as the B-1B, which had lower top speed at high altitude of Mach 1.25, but improved low-altitude performance of Mach 0.96. The electronics were also extensively improved during the redesign, and the airframe was improved to allow takeoff with the maximum possible fuel and weapons load. The B-1B began deliveries in 1986 and formally entered service with Strategic Air Command (SAC) as a nuclear bomber in 1986. By 1988, all 100 aircraft had been delivered. In the early 1990s, following the Gulf War and concurrent with the disestablishment of SAC and its reassignment to the newly formed Air Combat Command, the B-1B was converted to conventional bombing use. It first served in combat during Operation Desert Fox in 1998 and again during the NATO action in Kosovo the following year. The B-1B has supported U.S. and NATO military forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Air Force had 66 B-1Bs in service as of September 2012. The B-1B is expected to continue to serve into the 2030s, with the Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider to begin replacing the B-1B after 2025. The B-1s currently in inventory will reach the end of their service lives by 2045.
