I walk through how one can replace resistors with operational transconductance amplifiers. This would be a very strange thing to do on a PCB-level design, but on a CMOS process analog IC, resistors are bulky and complicated, whereas MOSFETs are essentially free. This video describes our development of a CMOS Programmable Analog Standard Cell Library in Skywater 130nm CMOS process. These devices use Floating-Gate (FG) elements for the programmability. The programmability is what makes designing a standard-cell library possible. The Skywater 130nm CMOS process is Open-Source and these cells are openly available so others can use these components in their IC design. EE344: Group 21 Tanmay Patil Anirudh Singhal Sanyyam Khandelwal Guide: Prof. Mukul Chandorkar TA : Yogesh Mahajan Story: Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation, or HWIL, is a technique that is used in the development and test of complex real-time embedded systems. HIL simulation provides an effective platform by adding the complexity of the plant under control to the test platform. The complexity of the plant under control is included in test and development by adding a mathematical representation of all related dynamic systems. HIL simulations find uses in various disciplines such as Power Systems, Automotive systems, Robotics etc. Emerging microscopic robots require the use of powerful mathematical models to simulate the physical world. Problems such as uid dynamics and optimal control, once considered super-computing workloads, are now needed in autonomous mobile robots. These problems are phrased as nonlinear differential equations. In this project we tackle the important problem class of solving non-linear/linear differential equations using a digitally programmable analog computer that has the traits of both an analog computer and digital computer. Digital computing offers ease of use and flexible programming while analog computing enables fast real time processing. For calculus functions such as integration, unlike digital computing, analog computing does not suffer from step size limitations. Hence, we use a hybrid analog-digital computer architecture to solve differential equations that draws on the strengths of each model of computation and avoids their weaknesses.

What do we mean by analog input? Analog values are continuous values, such as temperatures and pressures. While we tend to think of them in digital terms, at some point we have to convert them from the continuous world into our digital world, and this is where analog inputs come in. Voltage signals in the range of plus or minus 20 volts or so and current signals in milliamps are commonly used as both analog inputs to PLCs. Every PLC manufacturer has I/O modules to deal with these kinds of signals, along with other, more specialized modules. Missed our most recent videos? The programmable logic controller, or PLC, is a special purpose computer. It has no display, no keyboard, no printer, no hard drive, and hides in the control panel out on the factory floor, but it is still a computer. Initially, the PLC was a replacement for panels of relays, devices that turn on and off. Making a machine run using relays as logic was time-consuming and challenging, and making a change in the logic or the operation of the machine was almost as complicated as starting over. Scanalog: Interactive Design and Debugging of Analog Circuits with Programmable Hardware Evan Strasnick, Maneesh Agrawala, Sean Follmer UIST '17: ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology Session: Circuits Abstract Analog circuit design is a complex, error-prone task in which the processes of gathering observations, formulating reasonable hypotheses, and manually adjusting the circuit raise significant barriers to an iterative workflow. We present Scanalog, a tool built on programmable analog hardware that enables users to rapidly explore different circuit designs using direct manipulation, and receive immediate feedback on the resulting behaviors without manual assembly, calculation, or probing. Users can interactively tune modular signal transformations on hardware with real inputs, while observing real-time changes at all points in the circuit. They can create custom unit tests and assertions to detect potential issues. We describe three interactive applications demonstrating the expressive potential of Scanalog. In an informal evaluation, users successfully conditioned analog sensors and described Scanalog as both enjoyable and easy to use.
